Becoming a new parent is one of the most exciting and rewarding experiences in life. But it can also be challenging, overwhelming, and even scary. After all, you're suddenly responsible for a tiny human who depends on you for everything.
It's normal to feel lost and unsure of yourself during this time. You're adjusting to a new role, a new routine, and a new set of priorities. And it can take time to find your new normal.
Here are a few tips to help you on your journey:
Be patient with yourself. It takes time to adjust to parenthood. Don't expect to have it all figured out overnight. Be kind to yourself.
Don't compare yourself to other parents. Every family is different. What works for one family may not work for another. Some people have more support than others.
Ask for help. Don't be afraid to ask for help from your partner, family, friends, or other new parents.
Take care of yourself. It's important to make time for yourself, even when you're feeling overwhelmed. Get enough sleep, eat healthy foods, and exercise regularly. This is easier said than done at times. Pick one goal that you would accomplish for the week, month, etc and go for it (i.e. drinking more water).
Find time for your interests. It's important to maintain your own identity as a new parent. Make time for the things that you enjoy, even if it's just for a few minutes each day. My rule is 5-10 minutes of "me" time per day.
Here are some specific things you can do to help you find your new normal:
Create a new routine. This will help you to feel more organized and in control.
Set realistic expectations. Don't expect to be able to do everything that you used to do when you were pre-baby.
Delegate tasks. Ask your partner, family, or friends to help you with things like cooking, cleaning, and childcare. It is okay to ask for help.
Take breaks. It's important to take breaks throughout the day, even if it's just for a few minutes.
Don't be afraid to say no. This is my favorite point - please do not spread yourself thin due to people pleasing tendencies. It's okay to decline invitations or commitments if you're feeling overwhelmed.
Remember, you're not alone. Millions of other parents have gone through what you're going through. And it does get better. With time and patience, you will find your new normal.
If you are struggling to find your new normal as a new parent, please know that there is help available. You can talk to your partner, family, friends, or a mental health professional. There are also many support groups available for new parents.
You are not alone.
